Calculate weighted GPA using letter grades and credit hours

Math Calculator

GPA — Quick answer

GPA (Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of course grade points, weighted by credit hours.

GPA = Σ(grade_point × credits) / Σcredits
US 4.0 scale: A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0

Worked example: Three courses: A (3 credits), B (3 credits), B (3 credits). GPA = (4×3 + 3×3 + 3×3) / 9 = 30/9 = 3.33.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is GPA calculated?

GPA = Sum of (grade points × credit hours) for all courses, divided by total credit hours. For example: A (4.0 × 3 credits) + B (3.0 × 4 credits) = 24 points ÷ 7 credits = 3.43 GPA.

What does a 4.0 GPA mean?

A 4.0 GPA represents a perfect grade point average — all A grades on the standard US 4.0 scale. Some schools use weighted scales where A+ = 4.3 or 5.0.

What is a good GPA?

A GPA of 3.5–4.0 is generally considered excellent. 3.0–3.49 is good. 2.5–2.99 is satisfactory. Below 2.0 often places students on academic probation.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA uses a standard 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA gives extra points for harder courses (AP, IB, Honors), sometimes on a 5.0 scale.

What GPA do you need for honours?

Cum Laude typically requires 3.5+ GPA; Magna Cum Laude requires 3.7+; Summa Cum Laude requires 3.9+. Requirements vary by institution.

Can I raise my GPA in my last semester?

Yes, but the impact decreases as you accumulate more credits. Earlier semesters have proportionally more weight when you have fewer total credits.
