Ideal body weight — Quick answer
Ideal Body Weight (IBW) is a target weight based on height and gender. Several historical formulas exist (Devine, Robinson, Miller, Hamwi) — used in clinical dosing and aviation.
Devine (M): IBW = 50 + 2.3 × (height_in − 60) Devine (F): IBW = 45.5 + 2.3 × (height_in − 60) Robinson, Miller, Hamwi: similar slope, different intercepts
height_in — height in inches above 60 in (5 ft); convert: cm/2.54
IBW — ideal body weight in kg
Worked example: Male, 175 cm (68.9 in). Devine: IBW = 50 + 2.3 × (68.9 − 60) = 50 + 2.3 × 8.9 = 70.5 kg. Robinson: 52 + 1.9 × 8.9 = 68.9 kg. Miller: 56.2 + 1.41 × 8.9 = 68.8 kg.

Standard / source: Devine BJ (1974); Robinson JD (1983); Miller DR (1983); Hamwi GJ (1964); used in ARDS ventilator settings, drug dosing.
Used for: Clinical drug dosing (especially anaesthesia & ICU), ventilator tidal-volume settings (6 mL/kg IBW for ARDS), pilot weight allowances, weight-management baselines.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is ideal weight calculated?⌄
Ideal weight is calculated using formulas like Devine (50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet for men) or Hamwi. Different formulas give slightly different results.
Is there one universal ideal weight formula?⌄
No. Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi formulas each produce slightly different results. The range between them is considered a healthy target zone.
What is a healthy weight for 5ft 8in male?⌄
Using the Devine formula: 50 + 2.3 × 8 = 68.4 kg. Most formulas suggest 68–75 kg for a 5 ft 8 in (173 cm) male.
Does ideal weight account for muscle mass?⌄
Traditional ideal weight formulas do not account for body composition. Muscular individuals may weigh more than formula values while still being healthy.
How does ideal weight differ from BMI?⌄
BMI is a ratio of weight to height squared used to categorise body weight. Ideal weight formulas provide a target weight for a given height.
Can I use this for children?⌄
These formulas are designed for adults. Paediatric growth charts (CDC or WHO) should be used for children and adolescents.
